The ongoing road construction works taking place around certain parts of Islington has caused disruptions in delivery services according to local business employees.
The road construction, which officially began late last month on the 28th of March, is scheduled to continue up until the 25th of April, according to the Islington Council website. Impacted areas include Essex Road, as well as the neighbouring Northchurch and Southchurch Roads – where traffic restrictions amongst others, have been set in place.
Various employees working at businesses and offering services in the area, have expressed their concerns and personal experiences regarding the roadwork.
“I’ve been affected once or twice”, says Benny Thompson (51) an employee at the Essex Road Post Office. Within the space of a month working at the post office, Thompson mentions he has encountered a number of delays in the delivery of packages and parcels to the post office due to the road closures.
“[If] they are meant to come and pick up at the end of the day – five-thirty, they need to come like quarter-past-five, and sometimes they are delayed because of the road[blocks] and things like that.”
The Islington Council states that the road construction is due to proposals concerning the environment. “The proposals also include changes that make the area more biodiverse, accessible and attractive for all.” The council also hopes that the road construction will help “boost safety,” as 17 people in the area have been injured in the past five years due to road collisions.
Despite being affected, Thompson remains understanding of the situation, saying: “they are inconvenient for the people who are going to the buses and things like that, but it happens.” He adds: “it’s part of their continuous improvement for the roads.”
However, this understanding approach on the matter is not shared with everyone.
Cory Atkinson, (18) an employee working at the Ocean Wine convenience store, also in Essex Road, expresses his frustration with the roadworks.
“They’re very annoying. If we can minimize it, then that would be the best, ‘cause they make my life longer.”
Similar to Thompson’s experience, Atkinson details how the convenience store has experienced delays with the delivery of goods – particularly dairy products sold at the shop. “Well sometimes, when we buy dairy, it sits in the van a bit longer. Sometimes it can spoil the products.”
For more convenience, Thompson suggests: “They should write during the hours which are for the office or school-going time. They can do it at night and let these roads be open for the commuters”.
